What are some important skills or traits that you believe are essential for success in your role?

Ultimately, this business is about relationships. We form deep connections with our clients, who place the utmost trust in us. Thus, I really believe that compassion and humanity are critical in this field. People think that money is black-and-white, but it is actually very emotional. You must be able to understand everyone’s “money story” – why they are the way they are with money, what keeps them up at night, and what they need from you to feel comfortable.

What is one piece of advice you would give to someone just starting out in your field?

I am a firm believer in starting with the basics. If you want to learn this industry, start out as a Client Associate or Relationship Manager. Understand the operations of how things work, form deep connections with clients, and always understand the big picture purpose of why you are doing what you are doing. Why am I helping this client roll their SEP IRA into a traditional IRA? Why are we tax harvesting losses? Why are we stepping up the cost-basis in this account? If you are not asking questions, you’re not doing it right.

What do you believe sets the BHPW team apart from others in the financial planning industry?

We have a loyalty to our clients and to each other that is unmatched. The longevity of our team members is really unusual, especially with younger generations. I think the fact that we have stuck together for so long, that our clients have stuck with us for so long (some for more 35 years!), says a lot about who we are to each other and who we are to our clients. We recognize that this is about long-term relationships with people. Our clients and team feel like family. In an industry that revolves around money, no one – client or team member – is just a dollar sign.

What is something people might be surprised to learn about you?

I went to a music conservatory for college! I studied musical theatre and worked professionally as an actor and singer in New York and Los Angeles before making this career change many years ago. People think it is a random transition, but I know so many former actors who have ended up in the financial services industry. We are “people” people, after all!

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I am dying to see Prague, and pretty much everywhere in Austria. There is such rich culture and history there, and I am a major history buff.
